Check out different mediums of storage throughout the years and the capacities they held. Maybe not as far back as punch cards, but since tape (especially for backups) trying to stuff more data in a smaller foot print has been around for a long time. Hope you enjoy.
I find myself in a true quandary. First, I have true admiration for my good friend and fellow blogger 3Par Farley and never feel comfortable being on the other side of the coin from him. Users and Vendors alike have always had skepticism around capacity optimization and different points throughout history. The key, for end users is to be able to answer the questions:
